Grammar Tips
1. Using “il y a”
This expression never changes form — it always stays “il y a,” even for plural nouns.
Il y a un balcon. → There is a balcony.
Il y a deux cheminées. → There are two chimneys.
If you make it negative, “de” replaces “un” or “une”:
Il n’y a pas de balcon. → There isn’t a balcony.
2. Agreement with Possessive Forms
When you say what the house “has,” remember the noun’s gender:
La maison a un jardin. (masculine)
La maison a une clôture. (feminine)
To show ownership, use de or du / de la:
Le toit de la maison → the roof of the house
Les fenêtres du bâtiment → the windows of the building
3. Describing with Adjectives
Adjectives often come after the noun:
un mur blanc → a white wall
une maison moderne → a modern house
But short, common adjectives like grand, petit, beau, vieux come before the noun:
un grand jardin
une vieille cheminée
