Irregular Plurals
For many plurals, French simply adds an ‘s,’ just the same as in English. However, nouns ending in -eu or -au will add an ‘x.’
le cheveu the hair | les cheveux the hairs |
When referring to hair on the head, this is always referred to in the plural. For example:
il a les cheveux bruns | he has brown hair (literally: he has the brown hairs) |
Un œil (‘an eye’) has a highly irregular plural. It becomes les yeux for ‘eyes.’
Sentence Builder: The Face
J’ai… I have… Il a… He has… Elle a… She has… | les yeux bleus blue eyes les yeux marron brown eyes les yeux verts green eyes |
J’ai… I have… Il a… He has… Elle a… She has… | les cheveux blonds blond hair les cheveux bruns brown hair les cheveux gris grey hair |
J’ai… I have… Il a… He has… Elle a… She has… | les yeux bleus et les cheveux blonds blond hair and blue eyes |
The colour ‘brown’ in French has some nuances. Usually, when talking about eye colour, marron is used to mean brown. But for hair, generally brun is preferred although you may hear marron in this context.
