Your French Word Guide to a Vineyard Tour
There’s nothing quite like walking through the rows of vines under the French sun, hearing the word terroir on the breeze.
Whether you’re touring a small family vineyard in Burgundy or a grand estate in Bordeaux, understanding vineyard vocabulary will make your experience richer.
In this short guide, you’ll learn how to talk about the key parts of a vineyard — from the vigne to the cave à vin — and practise useful phrases for your visit.
A Visit to the Vineyard
When you visit un vignoble français, you’ll often be welcomed by le vigneron or le propriétaire, who takes pride in showing every step of the process — from la vigne to la bouteille.
In la cuverie, you’ll see the tanks where la fermentation happens, often surrounded by the scent of le vin jeune.
Rows of fûts de chêne line la cave à vin, where wines rest quietly until la mise en bouteille (bottling).
And of course, no visit is complete without la dégustation — the tasting! That’s your chance to swirl le vin in le verre à vin, breathe in the aromas, and describe what you taste.
Choose one complete ending from each group. Then use the connectors to describe the visit in four sentences.
D’abord, nous avons visité un vignoble en Provence.
Ensuite, nous sommes allés dans la cuverie.
Après cela, j’ai vu des fûts de chêne.
Finalement, j’ai goûté un vin blanc sec.

Cultural Notes: Wine Tourism in France
Wine tourism (l’œnotourisme) has become a major part of rural life in France.
Visitors are encouraged to explore les routes des vins — scenic wine routes that link villages, vineyards, and tasting cellars.
Every region has its signature charm:
- Bordeaux – world-famous châteaux and grand reds.
- Burgundy (Bourgogne) – family domaines and elegant whites.
- Alsace – picturesque villages with floral balconies and aromatic wines.
- Provence – pale rosés and sunlit terraces.
French etiquette tip: always show interest and respect for the producer’s craft. A small merci beaucoup pour la visite goes a long way.
Nous aimerions visiter le vignoble.
Y a-t-il une dégustation aujourd’hui ?
Peut-on acheter des bouteilles ici ?
J’ai vu des fûts de chêne dans la cave.
